US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra struck an optimistic tone regarding ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations. Speaking at an Independence Day event in Ottawa, Hoekstra highlighted the dedication of negotiators on both sides, suggesting a potential "win-win" outcome. His remarks implied that leaders could soon announce favorable deals for their respective countries.

The backdrop remains contentious. Despite the USMCA agreement signed during Trump's first term, the US has imposed tariffs up to 50% on steel, aluminum, and automotive imports—key Canadian exports. Canada retaliated with counter-tariffs on billions in American goods, including automobiles. Prime Minister Carney's silence on recent steel tariff hikes adds another LAYER of complexity.

Talks resumed after Canada dropped a digital services tax opposed by the US, according to WHITE House economic adviser Kevin Hassett. This move signals potential flexibility, though neither side has disclosed substantive progress.
